RESPONSIBLE RETAILING OF ENERGY DRINKS – RRED

 

I feel strongly that energy drinks are not suitable for children. Each can has a warning, ’not recommended for children’. The NHS has stated that because of the high levels of caffeine, sugar and acidity in energy drinks, they are ‘unnecessary’ and ‘unsuitable’ for children.

I believe that your company should have a policy of not selling energy drinks to children. I invite you to support the RRED campaign and become a Responsible Retailer of Energy Drinks. The following actions, if adopted, qualify a shop as a RRED retailer:

  • an age ID check at checkouts when shop workers feel that they are selling to an under 16 year old child
  • a red light alert to check age at the self service checkouts ( where these exist)
  • an advisory notice for on-line orders warning that these are not suitable for children ( where this exists)
  • placing energy drinks high up on shelves above child height
  • advisory notices aimed at parents and children at appropriate points in the shop
  • training and on-site support for staff
  • working pro-actively with schools and community groups to support healthy lifestyle choices for children
  • The RRED campaign is aimed at all shops which sell energy drinks. Think of your future customers and be among the first to be a RRED retailer. If you make your living from a community you have a responsibility to look after that community. All RRED retailers will be listed on the RRED website.
